The Etape du Tour is your chance to ride a stage of the Tour de France over completely closed roads and an absolutely stunning route. What makes the Etape so special? The atmosphere on the route is great with riders from around the world and friendly locals helping you up every climb. The organisation is excellent and the race directors who plan the route with meticulous attention to detail are the best in the world. That means you are guaranteed to be riding a very special route with stunning views, historic climbs, fun descents and lots of points of interest. From years of experience, we highly recommend booking at least an extra night to come for at least 4 nights, this gives you extra days for warm up rides in a beautiful part of the world and if you are flying, you avoid the madness at the airport on the Friday as people arrive from all corners of the globe to ride the Etape.

Routes & FAQs

The Routes

Starting in Albertville, this is a relatively short but very punchy mountain stage with very little flat. After summiting the stunning Comet de Roseland, we descend to Bourg St Maurice and then onto the final climb, the long and high Val Thorens - the final climb in the 2019 Tour de France and a fitting finish to a tough sportive.

Choose the Route

Ride Distance: 131

Elevation gain: 4000

There are four named climbs on the 2019 Etape du Tour. Straight out of Albertville we start the Col de Meraillet, almost 12km but at a very steady 7% - a perfect warm up for a day of climbing. We then go over the Roseland and have the fast descent to Bourg St Maurice. The next climb is the lesser known Cote du Longefoy, 10km with uneven gradients. We descend again for 15km to Moutiers before the final climb - 33km up to 2,365m for the summit finish at Val Thorens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting There

Thurs & Frid - 10.30am, 5.30pm and 9.30pm. Please book flights to arrive at least 30 minutes before one of these transfers

Documents Required

You will need to get a medical certificate signed off by your doctor (we will send you a template for this) showing you are fit for a cycling event. Bring this, some ID and a print out of your race number that will appear on your ASO Challenges page approx 2 weeks before the race. New for 2019 - medical certificates must be uploaded to your ASO account before the sportive.

What to Pack

The pens open early so unless it is very hot, you are likely to need arm warmers and a gilet while you wait to start. Pay careful attention to the forecasts and pack accordingly, while the route does not hit massive heights the summits can often be chilly so a light windproof jacket is very useful. Gearing can be quite a personal choice, the local rental bikes set up for these conditions typically have a 50/34 on front and 11/28 or even 11/32 on the back.

Upon purchasing your entry here, we will send instructions to register on the ASO website. You have until May to activate your entry, we will remind you to do this in May if you haven't already done so. Approx 2 weeks before the Etape you will get a Convocation on the ASO website. You will need a print out of this & a signed medical certificate (we will send a template to take to your doctor). Registrations are at the start village and will be open the two days before the sportive. Remember medical certificates must be uploaded onto your ASO account this year.

Start & Finish

Start time likely to be 6.30am to 7am. The start goes off in stages depending on your race number with the last group going out at 9am. The start groups are assigned based on previous Etape finishing times and the expected times you put in the registration form. If you are riding in a group and want to start together, put the same time. You are not guaranteed to be in the same pen and at the start it is not possible to move forward in your pens (but you can move back to be together).
